New Zealand’s much-debated economic recovery, or not, if you’ve been following it in the media, has largely been driven by strong commodity prices and coincidentally huge log export volumes rather than by domestic consumers opening their wallets.   

This has brought good times for many in the forestry sector, but at the same time the situation has been trying for domestic producers of sawn timber who must compete with export log buyers for the same resource.  Nonetheless, the free market operates in the local supply chain, so the wood goes to the highest bidder on the day or at the stump, unless there are longer-term contracts in place.
