WorkSafe to target small-scale forestry

The country’s safety watchdog, WorkSafe NZ, will focus more on small-scale harvesting operations in forestry during 2017, as it looks to target difficult-to-police areas of the industry...

 

Research carried for WorkSafe identified concerns about the health & safety approach of contractors working in woodlots and farm-forestry not being up to the same level of those in larger and corporate-run forests. 

Jo-Ann Pugh, Deputy GM of Assessments, WorkSafe NZ told the Safety Summit in Rotorua last month that while it had seen an overall reduction in risky and negative health and safety behavior across the industry, as well as other positive signs, it was clear there was still room for more good practice to be implemented, particularly among smaller operators.

WorkSafe research found “this area of the industry is characterised by less-developed health and safety systems, which will present greater risk as the volume of wood harvested in woodlots and farm-based forestry increases”.
