Lean Times continue
Its official, lowest trailer registrations this century, but buses keep on selling.
Only a total of 95 new heavy trailers were registered in the months of April and May compared to 188 for the same period 2008. According to official NZTA data the lowest previous this century was in 2001 at 143 so we are 49% down on last year and 34% down on the previous lowest. Overseas trade statistics also show a drastic fall off in both the volume and value of HS10 codes exports covering the various trailer types.
Not happy thoughts from which to start this issues report. However things are not all downwards. Commercial building activity in NZ is holding up, the domestic housing market appears to have stabilised in most areas and retail spending is better than forecast. The law firm that my wife works for has experienced a big upturn in conveyancing and business sales, that has resulted in late nights and weekend work for her to keep up and they have a schedule of work for weeks to come.
